Raced the Mt Diablo Challenge on Sunday morning. Mt Diablo is a mountain in the Walnut Creek area about a 25 min drive away. I have biked around there a few times during my IronMan training.
This race starts at the foot of the mountain and ends at the top. 11.2 miles and 3200 ft of elevation. It’s basically non-stop uphill the whole race. The challenge most try to achieve is to make it up to the top in 60 min or less. This however was not my goal given my recent injury.
Speaking of the injury. Got massage on Wednesday last week and stretched a whole bunch throughout the week. On Thursday morning the pain was basically gone. I could force the pain to happen with specific movements but just moving around was no problem.
Back to the race. My goal was to make it to the top without any pain. I had signed up for the 60-70 min start group. I made it up in 68 min. This resulted in place 300 out of 607 that finished. The first 139 beat the magic 60 min mark.
I had a flight to Chicago in the afternoon on Sunday. I had not really planned on the fact that pretty much everyone had to finish the race before they would allow us to ride back down. This caused some delays in my plan and I got pretty rushed to make it to the airport. In the end I got to my gate 3 min before it was supposed to depart. Luckily it was delayed.
